We had a “company meeting” to deconstruct the last job fair and plan the next one. “Company meeting” is in quotation marks because this means just 10 people, although Danny wasn’t there, Beth was in the Red Room working on editorial and tasked with answering the phone, and Jill was in the meeting but looked a little distracted. Then she went to the bathroom and never came back. Suspicious cooincidence? You decide.

We decided that we all like the new venue at the Renaissance. Nobody complained about parking, vendors like the lunch and Brad’s seminar was well attended. For the next Job Fair the big change is going from four hours to three. Instead of running from 12-4 the event will now be 12-3. This is plenty of time. After three hours our vendors get tired and start packing up to go home.

As for new shirts, we decided that with the economy the way it is we don’t want to incur more expense. The problem with the red shirts is that we only have the XXL size left which dwarfs most of us. The shirts are so old that they’re been through the wash too many times and now look pink instead of red. Next week Job Fair updates and vendors will be added regularly here.

HOSTING A JOB FAIR is a lot of work — and very nerve-wracking. The hardest part is estimating how many people will come. When unemployment is low, we have a lot of vendors and less traffic. During a recession, we have fewer companies who need to pay to hire and way more job seekers. It would be nice to find a happy medium, but it always seems like the room is too crowded or too empty, never just right.

Overall, this job fair was a big success. Parking was not a problem as it has been in years past. The vendors were happy, applicants expressed gratitude that someone was still hosting job fairs during these tough economic times. Our next event is Wed June 24, same location at the Hollywood Renaissance Hotel, 1755 N. Highland, Hollywood, CA.
